I've been invited by Residence Inn to contribute to their Family Travel Talk Forum on Facebook this year. We're a few months in, and it has been fun to see the forum become a place where traveling parents share thoughts and information..

This month I'm writing about tips for feeling like you've had a vacation even when you don't leave your hometown here and I hope you'll share your own tips as well.

A great way to feel refreshed and feel like you're on vacation in your hometown is to encourage visitors. We've got my mother in law to stay (i live in HK) and it's been really nice showing her around and renewing my love for the city

yeah you are right, there are so many places in our hometown which I never saw even though I am living there for like 25 years !

This sounds like a great group/forum! I find that I discover new things with my family when I try to think like a tourist in my own hometown. There is always so much more than I realized before!

    Hello:
I am glad you picked a Seattle attraction for your picture! My home town! Every once in a while we "play tourist" and do local stuff. Then we remember why we live here, it is awesome! Thanks.

I will never lose interest in sightseeing my hometown. Even if it's not that beautiful, the memories on it made it very special.

Staycation as I would love to call it, is a good way to have vacation without having to spend so much. This is perfect if you spend with your family and love ones.

Seems obvious, but visit your local tourism board, and visit the places that they tout...!

We finally had a good weekend to do this last weekend and went to the National Museum of Mexican Art. I was very impressed with out well the kids did inside the museum and am looking forward to trekking about to more Chicago attractions with them :-) I think an added bonus for us might be getting into the city by train or bus. It will be good practice for them if/when we make it to Europe.
